A day-long advocacy and awareness workshop on Ability Bhutan Society and Rights of Child is underway in Gasa. The workshop is attended by about 50 participants representing Dzongkhag administration, Royal Bhutan Police, Local government and Teachers.
The workshop is resourced by Namgay Dorji, PO, Ability Bhutan Society, and Kinley Dorjee, PO of National Commission for Women and Child.
With inspiration from the Golden Throne, the Ability Bhutan Society (ABS) was founded in 2012 to respect and support the persons living with moderate to severe diverse abilities, primarily children and their families. Her Majesty The Druk Gyaltsuen is The Royal Patron, who is not only a great source of inspiration but also deeply and actively engaged in the activities of the Society.
ABS has already made a huge impact in narrowing the gap between the so-called mainstream population and the differently abled (disabled). The scope of this ABS is really huge and complex knowing that even in a small Dzongkhag like Gasa with just 3500 population has roughly about 30 persons with disabilities. Therefore it becomes a sacred duty and obligation of every citizen to support ABS in pursuing their mandates and vision of making Bhutan a disabled friendly and disable respecting Nation.

Gasa built a separate accommodation and resting facility near the Tsachu (hot spring) ponds for Tsachu goers with disabilities. This facility has a ramp at the entrance and a support handle in the toilet. This facility is in operation since a year ago.

NCWC’s session on Rights of the Child and the UN Convention of Rights of Child (UNCRC) was also very eye-opening.
